Pneumatic Directional Control Valves
Pneumatic directional control valves (DCVs) control the direction of compressed air flow to actuators (cylinders, pneumatic motors, grippers). They are described by their number of ports and positions:
- 2/2-way: 2 ports, 2 positions — simple open/close for air supply shut-off.
- 3/2-way: 3 ports, 2 positions — supply and exhaust for single-acting cylinders.
- 4/2-way: 4 ports, 2 positions — extends/retracts double-acting cylinders.
- 5/2-way: 5 ports, 2 positions — most common for double-acting cylinders; separate exhaust ports allow speed control.
- 5/3-way: 5 ports, 3 positions — centre position options: all-blocked, all-exhausted, or all-pressurised.
Actuation Methods
- Solenoid-operated: Electrically controlled, connects to PLC outputs. Single or double solenoid. Spring return (single solenoid) or detented (double solenoid).
- Pilot-operated: Operated by compressed air pilot signal. Used for large valve sizes requiring high flow rates.
- Mechanically operated: Roller lever, push button, pedal — for safety interlocks and manual override.
- Manually operated: Lever or palm button for manual control.
Valve Terminals & Manifolds (Valve Islands)
Modern pneumatic systems use integrated valve islands — multiple directional valves mounted on a shared manifold block. This reduces piping complexity, enables fieldbus connection (Profibus, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, IO-Link), and allows compact, efficient machine design.

Proportional Valves
Proportional pneumatic valves provide continuously variable pressure or flow control in response to an analogue signal (0–10V or 4–20 mA). Used for precision force control, proportional positioning, and closed-loop pneumatic control:
