Butterfly Valve Types
Concentric (Centric) Butterfly Valves
The most economical design. The disc shaft runs through the centre of the disc. The rubber seat seals against the disc face on both sides. Used for water, HVAC, and general industrial service at moderate temperatures and pressures (up to 150°C, 16 bar). Common brands: Keystone (Emerson), Bray Series 30/31, KSB BOAX-B, AVK.
High-Performance Butterfly Valves (Double-Eccentric)
Two offsets (shaft off-centre) reduce seat friction and wear. PTFE or metal seats. Suitable for chemical, oil & gas, and steam service at higher temperatures (up to 250°C+). Higher pressure ratings (ASME 150–600). Brands: Flowserve, Keystone, Crane, KSB.
Triple-Offset Butterfly Valves (TOV)
Three geometric offsets produce a completely friction-free seating action — the disc "cams" away from the seat on opening. Zero-leakage, metal-seated. Used in oil & gas, power generation, LNG, and chemical for tight shut-off requirements at high pressure/temperature. Brands: Emerson/Vanessa, Flowserve, IMI Truflo, Crane.
Body Configurations
- Wafer-type: Clamped between flanges. Most compact and economical. Cannot be used as end-of-line valve.
- Lug-type: Tapped lugs allow bolting without through bolts — can be used as end-of-line valve with one side removed.
- Double-flanged: Full flanges on both sides, self-supporting. Used for larger sizes and higher pressure ratings.
- Butt-weld: For welded pipeline installation.
Seat Materials
- EPDM: Hot water, steam to 150°C, chemicals
- NBR: Mineral oils, fuels, hydrocarbons
- Neoprene: General water/chemical service
- PTFE-lined: Corrosive chemicals, aggressive media
- Metal-to-metal: High temperature, high pressure, fire-safe
