Industrial Gate Valves

Full-bore isolation valves for pipelines, process plants, and infrastructure. Wedge gate, parallel slide, knife gate, conduit gate, and expanding gate designs. Rising and non-rising stem. Handwheel, gearbox, and actuated operation.

Gate Valve Types

Wedge Gate Valves

The most common gate valve design. A tapered wedge-shaped gate seals against two inclined body seats. Solid wedge is the simplest and most robust design — standard for water, oil, gas, and general process service. Flexible wedge allows slight flexing to compensate for thermal distortion, reducing binding in high-temperature steam service. Split wedge (double-disc) self-aligns to body seats and is less prone to thermal binding.

  • Solid wedge: Robust, low-cost, for non-temperature-cycling services. Most common design.
  • Flexible wedge: Reduces thermal binding — standard for steam service (API 600 / ASME B16.34).
  • Split wedge / double disc: Self-adjusting for seat alignment, suitable for both directions.

Parallel Slide Gate Valves

Two parallel discs held apart by a spring — each disc seats on its respective seat face. The spring force ensures contact on both seats regardless of flow direction. No wedging action means no risk of thermal binding — the preferred design for high-temperature steam pipelines in power generation. Suitable for bi-directional sealing. Brands: Crane, Weir, Spirax Sarco, KSB.

Knife Gate Valves

Thin, sharp-edged gate cuts through viscous fluids, slurries, pulp, and fibrous media. Compact body — much shorter face-to-face than standard gate valves. Used in pulp & paper, mining, wastewater, and food processing. Typically seat-guided on PTFE or rubber sleeves. Brands: DeZURIK, Orbinox, ERHARD, KSB, Crane.

Conduit Gate Valves (Slab Gate)

A slab gate with a through-bore that aligns with the pipeline when open, providing truly full-bore, zero-obstruction flow. Pig-passable — the through-bore aligns perfectly. The gate moves in a rectangular channel in the body. Standard for oil & gas pipeline isolation, pigging, and metering stations. Brands: Cameron (WKM), Grove, SPX, KSB, Neway.

Expanding Gate Valves

A two-piece gate assembly — when the valve reaches open or closed position, the segments expand outward to engage the seats positively. Used in natural gas pipelines and high-pressure applications where positive seating and low operating torque are required. Brands: Cameron (WKM), SPX, Orbit.

Design Standards

  • API 600: Steel bolted bonnet gate valves — industry standard for process gate valves.
  • API 602: Compact design gate, globe and check valves — forged body for small bore.
  • API 6D: Pipeline valves — gate, ball, check, and plug valves for pipeline service.
  • ASME B16.34: Pressure-temperature ratings for flanged, threaded, and welded valves.
  • BS 1414 / EN 13709: European equivalent to API 600 for steel gate valves.
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156: Sour service — H₂S environments in oil & gas.

Stem Types

  • Outside screw & yoke (OS&Y) / rising stem: The stem rises visibly when opened — positive visual indication of valve position. Standard for most process applications.
  • Inside screw non-rising stem (NRS): Stem does not rise — threads are inside the body. Used where headroom is limited (buried service, underground water mains).

Body Materials

  • Cast carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB): General service — oil, gas, water, steam.
  • Low-temperature carbon steel (ASTM A352 LCB/LCC): Cryogenic and cold-climate service.
  • Cast stainless steel (ASTM A351 CF8M): Corrosive service — chemicals, seawater, food.
  • Duplex stainless (ASTM A890): Highly corrosive or high-chloride environments.
  • Ductile iron / cast iron: Water supply, fire protection, HVAC — lower pressure ratings.
  • Bronze / gunmetal: Marine, potable water, low-pressure steam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between API 600 and API 6D gate valves?

API 600 covers steel bolted-bonnet gate valves for general process service (refineries, petrochemical plants). API 6D covers pipeline valves specifically — gate, ball, check, and plug valves for gathering, transmission, and distribution pipelines. API 6D valves have stricter requirements for full-bore design, pig-passability, and pressure testing. A pipeline operator will specify API 6D; a refinery will typically specify API 600.

When should I use a parallel slide gate valve vs a wedge gate valve?

Parallel slide gate valves are preferred for high-temperature steam service where thermal cycling can cause a wedge gate to bind in its seats (thermal binding). The parallel design ensures the gate can always move freely regardless of temperature. Wedge gate valves are more economical and suitable for non-cycling services — water, oil, gas, and moderate-temperature process applications. For steam headers above 200°C, specify parallel slide.

Can you supply gate valves for sour service (H₂S)?

Yes. We supply NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant gate valves for H₂S service in oil & gas applications. Sour service requires specific material restrictions on hardness (typically HRC 22 max for carbon steel), stem and fastener materials, and weld procedures. We source from Crane, KSB, Velan, and Neway with full material traceability documentation. Specify your H₂S partial pressure and temperature and we will confirm the correct material class.
